So, Bashiok decided last night to make a huge post over this whole no flying issue, if you haven't read it yet, I'll summarize in one sentence:
"We don't want people flying over content."
Here's my beef with that synopsis: it's making Blizzard sound like hypocrites.
Why? You can literally pay to skip every portion of content up to level 90. I don't care that the content is old. I don't care that the content is "so last expansion." I do care that this paid 90 thing goes against what I just quoted above.
Now, I understand the reasoning for the paid 90 feature. I, myself, do have certain points in the game in which I'm like "I don't want to level anymore, I hate this zone" (usually HFP and lately some of the LK content). But that's the thing: if you have multiple 90's, it makes sense to be able to pay for a boost (though I still think there should be limitations on it).
Where my thinking deviates here is when it comes to new players: they haven't seen the content yet. Why should they be allowed to skip it?
Yet, on that same note: Bliz is trying to make this whole "We don't want you flying because you skip content" argument.
Now, get on board with me here: I'm a big supporter of no flying while leveling. I have no issue whatsoever on having to use my ground mounts/run when I am leveling.
But when I get to max level? Yes, I expect to be able to fly. I've already seen the content on the ground, now I want to explore the rest of the world. I think of it as my reward for making it to max level. Is it a spoiled attitude? Yes and no: flying has literally been in the game for 8 years now. Why the hell get rid of it now?
World pvp? I'm on a PvE server, I have absolutely zero interest in world pvp. If I want to pvp, I queue for a BG. WPvP died a very long time ago. WPvp these days is going to the lowbie zones and killing lowbies.
Immersion? I'm more immersed having the freedom to go where I want to without restrictions while flying than I am on a taxi mount.
World bosses? When I get invited to a group for a world boss, people want me to get there as quickly as possible. Bliz got rid of Have Group, Will Travel so it's not like people can mass summon.
World events? Let's be honest here, how many world events have you done when Bliz does have them? I'm also talking about holiday events here. I think on each character I might do them once and not bother afterwards. Same goes with scenarios (I got bored of those in 5 minutes) and TI/Troll Island (only reason I went to either was because of world bosses).
For you that support this change, might I ask, are you just using your experience from TI and Troll Island when it comes to this? Because if you are, you are not going to enjoy this when/if it goes live. Why? Because ground travel gets very old, very quick- especially when it comes to an entire continent. It works in smaller zones because the zones are small.
Back on point, Bash has just made Bliz look like a bunch of hypocrites. I think I'm going to use a "wait and see" and "play it by ear" approach before I decide to buy the expac.
